This year marks the 20th anniversary of Art Basel Miami Beach. An instant success after its first edition, this year the contemporary art fair will host 282 leading and emerging international galleries. Its themed categories are as follows: Meridians (large scale works), Survey (historically relevant practices), Positions (young galleries and emerging artists), Nova (works created in last three years), Edition (prints and multiples), and Kabinett (gallery-curated selections displayed in a separate section of their booth). Art Basel Miami Beach will also host Conversations, a program that brings together art world figures in conversation about the global contemporary art scene. The main section of the fair, Galleries, features 213 leading international galleries. Displaying works in every medium, Galleries highlights the highest quality works from artists around the globe. Returning galleries include Karma International from Zurich, Galerie Barbara Thumm from Berlin, and Galeria Raquel Arnaud from São Paolo. Galleries making the transition this year from other sectors to Galleries include Chapter NY from New York, Hannah Hoffman from Los Angeles, Balice Hertling from Paris, and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery from New York.
Curated by Magalí Arriola, the fair’s category Meridians is a platform for large-scale works. Featuring performances, paintings, and monumental installation works, this section pushes the boundaries of the typical art fair layout. One exhibition we’re particularly excited about is Jonathas de Andrade’s O Rebote do Bote. Over the past decade, the artist has collected lost or forgotten swim trunks in Recife, Brazil. His work Achados e Perdidos (Lost and Found) features sculptures of the male body, each wearing a pair of trunks. The work sparks a dialogue between representations of the body, masculinity and popular art, and the traditional pottery work of artisans in Brazil who produced the sculpted bodies, all in the setting of a mock public bath.

Art Basel Miami Beach is marking its 20th birthday with Conversations, a free program curated by Emily Butler. Over its nine panels, Conversations will bring together 35 leading figures in the art world, including curators, artists, and critics. The aim of the program is to create a platform that facilitates conversation around the global contemporary art scene. Conversations will particularly highlight the concepts of community, hybridity, and the cross-pollination of ideas. Launching the program is an artist talk by Carrie Mae Weems, whose work explores the notion of cultural identity within political structures, and musician and artist Nona Hendryx. Conversations will also host guests including Ming Smith, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Christopher Myers and Chino Amobi.
Visitors to Art Basel Miami Beach can also explore the many events taking place around the city that week. From November 27th to December 6th, leading Florida-based art institutions will host over 60 events and exhibitions for Miami Art Week.
