6 Art Fairs in the German-Speaking Market in 2023
When it comes to the commercial world of art, art fairs are of indispensable value to participating galleries, artists, and collectors alike. Participants from all across the globe are offered an unparalleled opportunity for market exposure. In 2019, it was estimated by UBS and Art Basel that 46% of all art market revenue can be attributed to the sales made at art fairs. This year, there are a number of highly-anticipated exhibitions being held in the German-speaking market. Join Artsper as we run through some of the fairs that our experts have their eyes on!
1. Vienna Contemporary Art Fair (7-10th September)

Austria’s leading art fair will be held from 7th to 10th September at the Kursalon exhibition hall, in the heart of Vienna. It will exhibit sculptures, paintings and large-scale installations from a variety of styles and movements. The fair seeks primarily to unite the contemporary art worlds of Western and Eastern Europe. Each year, visitors benefit from a specially curated exhibition named ZONE1, which brings to light the emerging talent from the Austrian market. Be sure to visit the fair’s official website to explore this year’s partner galleries and artists. What’s more, students visiting the exhibition will receive a discount on their ticket!
2. Art Basel Art Fair (15-18th July)

Our next fair is known worldwide for its sheer scale and variety in artistic styles. Switzerland’s iconic Art Basel is taking place from the 15th to 18th of July. Featuring over 4,000 artists from around the globe, Art Basel is unique in its organization. You’ll find themed individual exhibitions, lectures from members of the artistic community, and a commitment to sustainability in the operation of the fair. This year, we’re looking forward to the fair’s Feature exhibition, dedicated exclusively to artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. If you’re a film fanatic, you’ll love this year’s investigation into the role of media in contemporary art.
3. Parallel Vienna (11-14th May, 5-10th September)

Are you keen to explore some of the rising stars in contemporary art? The Parallel Vienna art fair will be celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, from the 5th to 10th September! Since its inception, the fair has committed itself to representing new talents in the world of contemporary art. Transforming a different vacant building each year into a platform for the presentation of contemporary art, Parallel is a unique hybrid between art fair, exhibition space and artist studio. In 2020, Parallel launched a partner event called Parallel Editions, specializing primarily in prints and graphic works. This will take place from 11th to 14th May at the Neue Kunstverein Wien, an interdisciplinary exhibition space in Vienna.
4. Art Cologne Art Fair (16-19th November)

The world’s very first contemporary art fair, Germany’s Art Cologne, will be opening its doors to the public between the 16-19th November. Over 200 galleries shall be showcasing their artwork this year. This shall be across a variety of curated exhibitions of post-war, contemporary art, and art produced by what the fair has defined as “cutting-edge” artists. This year, there will be a variety of events and exhibition openings throughout the Rhineland. You don’t want to miss this one!
5. Art Karlsruhe (4-7th May)

Are you searching for a variety of works, from the classical modern pieces to the most innovative creations in the contemporary art market? We think that you’ll love exploring the showcases at Art Karlsruhe. Currently taking place at the town’s Rheinstetten Congressional Palace and Exhibition Center, this fair is organized into “thematic sections,” from Art after 1945, to Sculpture, to Graphic Prints and Original Editions. So you can tailor your visit to your own personal tastes and artistic preferences! We’re particularly looking forward to exploring the work of influential Nouveau-Realists such as Yves Klein, and works taken from the American Fluxus movement of the 1960s.
6. Positions Art Fair (14-17th September 2023)

To round off our list of highly-anticipated art fairs this year, our experts are looking forward to the 10th edition of Berlin’s Positions Art Fair. The fair, held between 14th and 17th September, welcomes contemporary galleries from across Germany and around the world. This year, to mark the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Berlin and Mexico City, the fair will make certain Mexican galleries a focal point of the showcase. The variety offered at Positions this year is set to be unparalleled, and we think you’ll love visiting this fair!
