5 Emerging Italian Artists To Watch

We all love the grand masters of Italian art, but even today the country continues to produce talented artists that are equally as noteworthy! Painters, sculptors, and street artists alike are rapidly entering the art scene. We know it can be hard to keep up with the ever-changing art market. Artsper has put together a list of 5 emerging Italian artists that you should follow!

1. Tommaso Fattovich

Tommaso Fattovich was born in Milan, Italy in 1977, and immediately began soaking up the creativity that surrounded him. Although he moved to the United States in his early teenage years, Fattovich continues to draw inspiration from his birthplace in his self-described “Abstract Punk” paintings. The self-taught artist uses a mixture of mediums and tools to create his work, resulting in highly textured and expressive pieces.

In addition to brushes, Fattovich may use his hands, forks and towels to make energetic marks on a canvas. He employs colorful acrylic and oil paint in a playful manner, thus increasing the overall liveliness of a piece. Once the artist is satisfied with the composition, the dynamic result powerfully and personally connects to a wide range of viewers. The Italian painter currently lives and works in Florida and has hosted exhibitions in several major cities across America. Tommaso Fattovich’s unconventional techniques and expressive paintings make him a unique Italian artist that you need to keep up with!

2. Francesca Borgo

Francesca Borgo is a self-taught painter born and raised in northern Italy, representing the natural world in a unique way. Borgo notes daily outdoor walks as her main source of inspiration, and her depiction of the scenes she encounters is entirely original. The Italian painter particularly loves to portray the intersections of clouds and light. Her painting technique uses peaceful colors and unique shapes that are not representative of the real world.

The exploration of this subject and theme has allowed Borgo to express herself and connect to her medium in her home studio in Trieste, Italy. Further inspired by modern and contemporary artists such as Jackson Pollock, Zao Wou-Ki and Mark Rothko, Borgo has continued to make a name for herself internationally at art fairs and in private collections. Francesca Borgo is an emerging Italian artist not to be missed!

3. Clet Abraham

Clet Abraham gives a new meaning to street art, by literally adorning street signs with his humorous art. Born in France in 1996 and now based in Florence, Italy, Clet puts a playful spin on familiar traffic signage using customized stickers. For example, the artist alters a “Do Not Enter” sign with a human arm holding a key extending out of the white line, reaching for an added key hole. Clet’s ironic symbolism contradicts the authoritative orders of traffic signs, and his work has increased influence in the major European cities where he displays his work. Against the backdrop of traditional and historical cities such as Paris, Rome, and London, Clet’s contemporary stickers are especially unexpected and powerful. Clet’s following is growing rapidly, and he’s one artist you should be sure to follow!

4. Alessandra Bisi

Alessandra Bisi was born in Milan, Italy in 1965, and the influence of her birthplace is clear in her artwork. Bisi studied painting and design in her hometown, and did not stop learning there. The artist traveled around the world where she was exposed to other cultures and their art forms. Bisi has explored several mediums and focuses on painting. The emerging artist uses color and shapes to portray strong memories of places, especially Italy and her unique world travels. Her gestural and colorful paintings are most recently inspired by travels along the Mediterranean. Her past collections evoke memories of India, Indonesia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central America. Follow Alessandra Bisi to discover her newly inspired collections of artwork!

5. Gianfranco Meggiato

Sculpture artist Gianfranco Meggiato, born in Venice, Italy in 1963, emerged onto the art scene at a very young age. The Italian artist first exhibited his work in his hometown in 1979 and 1984 by invitation of the Municipality of Venice and has continued to show his work in Italy and abroad ever since. Largely inspired by the values of the Italian Renaissance, Meggiato places an emphasis on the centrality of the human experience. His often spherical sculptures are made of stone, bronze, wood, and ceramic, and reflect the universally complicated path of life.

Meggiato’s exploration of space and movement portrays the sometimes tumultuous and ever-changing journey that humans experience both internally and externally. Correspondingly, the Italian sculptor’s work often exhibits an inner core beneath the outer layer of the sculpture, making the work especially compelling to observe. Overall, Meggiato creates sculptures that spark the viewer’s interest both visually and intellectually, and is an artist absolutely worth following!

These artists are new and noteworthy for their unique styles and mediums, and no two are alike. This list of five is emerging onto the art scene alongside a host of many other young artists, so be sure to check out more on Artsper’s website!
