ASTRUP FEARNLEY MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Opened to the public in 1993, the Astrup Fearnley is a private museum based on the collection of a private individual begun in the 60s. It concentrates itself more on works or artists than on movements. Thus, you’ll find some representatives of the Young British Artists or some artists from the German abstract expressionism. The museum got itself talked about in 2002 when it acquired the “Michael Jackson with bubbles” of Jeff Koons for $5 million.

MAXXI – NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE 21st CENTURY ARTS
Designed by Zaha Hadid, the MAXXI is a Roma national museum which opened its doors in 2010. Located in the popular neighborhood of Flaminio, it distinguishes itself from the classic landscape of Rome by its quality contemporary architecture. Dedicated to contemporary creation, the museum is run by a foundation created and grant-aided by the Minister of Culture. In its 10000 square meters, you will stroll among Anish Kapoor’s works of art, Gilbert & George or also Gerhard Richter.

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO
Designed by the American-Canadian architect Frank Gherym, the Bilbao Guggenheim was inaugurated in 1997 by Juan Carlos. Worldwidely known for its structure and architecture, the Bilbao Guggenheim is also renowned for welcoming gigantic works like the Snake of Richard Serra. It also welcomes some Basque artists’ works but most of the works come from the permanent collection of the Guggenheim, even though the museum also acquired some paintings of Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko or Anselm Kieffer.

STEDELIJK MUSEUM
The Stedelijk, neighbouring the famous Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, is a modern and contemporary art but also design museum. It opened its doors in 1895 and was designed by Adriaan Willem Weissman. Among its collection, you’ll find artists like Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollok, Karel Appel, Andy Warhol or Willem de Kooning.
