Our favorites by... David Hockney

The famous pool paintings

The painter is especially famous for his depictions of pools throughout his work. Most notably: Portrait of an Artist, sometimes called Pool with Two Figures, pictured below. The work was created in 1972 and is worth over $90 million. This remarkable work is notable, too, for its size. Measuring at 7 feet by 10 feet, Hockney invites viewers to step into the tranquil scene in front of them. Painted with acrylic on canvas, Portrait of an Artist is a true emblem of the Pop Art movement.

Other outdoor scenes

Another notable part of Hockney’s arsenal is his outdoor scenes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hockney isolated in Normandy, France and continued his work. This time, though, he stepped away from his traditional acrylic and canvas medium and focused instead on digital creation. In 2021, the Musée de l’Orangerie celebrated Hockney’s recent ventures into digital landscapes. Below, discover some of his earlier works!
